René Lévesque: A pioneer of Nation-to-Nation relationships with Indigenous Peoples
Éric Cardinal, SEIZE03’s President, had the honor and pleasure of hosting a round table discussion on René Lévesque’s legacy as the father of “Nation-to-Nation relations”!
The event, held at the Musée de la civilisation and organized by the Fondation René-Lévesque, brought to a close, on the eve of National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Année Lévesque celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of the former Premier of Quebec.
An introductory speech by Marjolaine Étienne, President of Femmes Autochtones du Québec – Quebec Native Women, set the stage for the ensuing exchanges between the illustrious panelists present, Mr. Louis Bernard, Secretary General of the Executive Council under René Lévesque and Quebec’s negotiator for the general agreement-in-principle with the Innu Nation, Mr. Konrad Sioui, Regional Chief of the AFNQL from 1985 to 1992 and Grand Chief of the Huron-Wendat Nation from 2008 to 2020, and Mr. Pierre Trudel, anthropologist and retired professor of anthropology at the Université de Montréal. Konrad Sioui, Regional Chief of the AFNQL from 1985 to 1992 and Grand Chief of the Huron-Wendat Nation from 2008 to 2020, and Mr. Pierre Trudel, anthropologist, retired professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal and Société Recherches autochtones au Québec Vice-President’s.
Constructive exchanges, inspiring anecdotes, a fine tribute to the great man that was René Lévesque. A tribute also to his legacy and his avant-garde vision of relations with First Nations and Inuit, the impact of which is still felt today. All in all, a truly successful evening!
For those who missed the event, it will be rebroadcast shortly on Savoir Media.
